German Shopping Malls and Karstadt Face Empty Shelves Amid Retail Crisis

Physical retail centres in Germany are grappling with declining footfall as online shopping erodes traditional sales. Mall operators stress the need for a balanced mix of shops, services and leisure activities to keep visitors inside all day. The Gropius Passagen, serving Berlin’s southeast and Brandenburg, plans to attract a broader customer base by adding new tenants and entertainment options, while its manager aims to create an “All day” experience.

At the same time, Karstadt’s Saarbrücken department store is dealing with empty refrigerated aisles after a technical failure and staffing shortages forced the cooling units offline for weeks. The shortage of fresh meat, cheese and other perishables has reduced the store’s offering and may persist until repairs are completed.
