Germany's SoVD urges civil servants into statutory health insurance

The Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD) called for civil servants to be included in Germany’s statutory health and nursing insurance schemes. Board chair Michaela Engelmeier argued that a "Bürgerversicherung" – a citizen insurance where everyone contributes – is needed to make the statutory health insurance system future‑proof, stating, "Um die gesetzliche Krankenversicherung zukunftssicher aufzustellen, fordern wir seit Jahren eine Bürgerversicherung, in die alle einzahlen – also auch Beamte." She added that financing health and long‑term care by all is the only fair approach because both public and private insured receive the same services.

The demand aligns with comments from economist Achim Truger, who said that including civil servants could strengthen the health insurance funds, and former health minister Karl Lauterbach, who voiced support for extending statutory coverage to civil servants.
