German sports associations increase focus on health education
German sports associations are increasingly prioritizing health education and preventative measures alongside traditional training and competition. Organizations such as the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the German Sports Youth, and the Federal Institute for Public Health have established a cooperation agreement to promote movement in daily life and grassroots sports, as well as addiction prevention through initiatives like ‘Kinder stark machen’ and ‘Alkoholfrei Sport genießen’.
Beyond general wellness, there is a growing focus on the physiological development of young athletes. Experts highlight the connection between physical posture, training loads, and dental health. For instance, repetitive movement patterns in swimming or ball sports, as well as habitual mouth breathing during exertion, can impact jaw development and tooth alignment. Coaches and instructors are encouraged to observe signs such as persistent mouth breathing or muscular imbalances and advise parents to seek professional medical clarification when necessary.
