German sports clubs expand programs to include rehabilitation and fitness

German sports clubs are expanding their programming to integrate medical rehabilitation with general fitness and community sports. Starting September 1, 2026, TuS Gahlen will implement a structured schedule featuring orthopedic rehabilitation in the mornings, followed by cardiac rehabilitation, Zumba, and volleyball in the evenings. This approach aims to accommodate different health needs within a single daily structure.

Other regional clubs are also specializing their offerings. SV Viktoria Rethem is providing compensatory gymnastics specifically for those over 60, while the Winsen dance department and Laaber Dance Club are focusing on health-oriented programs such as venous gymnastics and functional back training.

Scientific research supports these integrative approaches, noting that regular physical activity significantly impacts mental health. Studies indicate that active individuals experience fewer days of poor mental health, and specific activities like strength training can improve anxiety symptoms by up to 87 percent. Additionally, activities such as dancing and jogging have shown potential benefits for managing depression and neurodegenerative processes.
