German states demand federal funding for rail infrastructure
At a transport ministers' conference in Hohenschwangau, German state ministers are calling on the federal government to increase funding for rail infrastructure and address rising costs.
A primary point of contention is the reform of track fees (Schienenmaut). State ministers, including those from Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria, are demanding that the federal government compensate for rising costs imposed via DB InfraGo to prevent service restrictions and support the shift from road to rail.
Additionally, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's transport minister, Wolfgang Blank, is urging the federal government to secure 7 million euros in the 2027 budget for planning services for the 'Vorpommern-Magistrale' rail connection (Berlin–Greifswald–Stralsund–Sassnitz). The expansion of this line is estimated to cost approximately 500 million euros.
Industry groups, such as 'Die Güterbahnen', have warned that significant fee increases scheduled for 2028 could heavily impact the chemical, agricultural, and steel sectors.
