SPD Demands Improvements to Federal Daycare Funding Plans

SPD politician Gerald Eisenblätter called for revisions to the German federal daycare plans, arguing that the principle “who orders, pays” must also apply to early childhood education. He warned that the draft Kita‑Startchancen‑ und Qualitätsentwicklungsgesetz presented by Federal Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) – which includes language tests for all four‑year‑olds and targeted support to ease the transition to primary school – lacks sufficient funding for the Länder and municipalities to meet new quality standards.

The federal government has pledged €9.25 billion through 2034 for the initiative, but Eisenblätter warned that the current allocations risk leaving eastern states, such as Saxony, under‑funded. He urged that any nationwide quality standards be matched by durable financial support for the states and local authorities to avoid gaps in staffing and facility resources.
