Germany braces for record heat as Siebenschläfertag predicts hot summer

The traditional Siebenschläfertag on 27 June 2026, a folkloric weather marker, is forecast by the German Weather Service (DWD) to bring a very hot day in Germany, with temperatures expected up to 42 °C in the southwest, around 40 °C in the east and 35‑39 °C elsewhere, accompanied by local thunderstorms. DWD meteorologist Jacqueline Kern notes that while the rule – “as the weather on Siebenschläfertag, so the next seven weeks” – is interesting, it is not scientifically proven and one day does not determine the whole summer. The day’s name derives from the legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus and is unrelated to the rodent of the same name. Meteorologists caution that the heat wave, while intense, may be moderated in the coming days by thunderstorms, and the overall summer trend remains uncertain.
