German students study GDR history and Stasi repression
Students at German secondary schools have engaged in specialized history programs focused on the division of Germany and the history of the GDR.
At Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum, 12th-grade students visited Leipzig to study the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 and the history of German democracy. The excursion included a visit to the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum and a guided tour featuring eyewitness Hans-Jürgen Jentzsch. Students examined artifacts from the SED dictatorship and learned about the ‘Bückwaren’ system, where goods were traded privately due to socialist equality claims being contradicted by actual availability.
At Marie-Therese-Gymnasium Erlangen, 10th and 11th-grade students learned about the repressive nature of the Stasi through personal testimonies. Christian Ahnsehl described the psychological pressure of being recruited as an unofficial collaborator at age 15, while Mario Röllig shared his experiences of imprisonment and psychological torture in the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen prison following a failed escape attempt in 1987.
