German study links meal timing to fat‑tissue gene activity

Researchers from the German Institute for Nutrition Research Potsdam‑Rehbrücke and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin examined how the timing of carbohydrate and fat intake influences gene activity in subcutaneous fat tissue. The crossover study involved 29 overweight men without diabetes, who followed two isocaloric diet plans: one with a carbohydrate‑rich breakfast and fat‑rich dinner, and the opposite pattern. Repeated fat‑tissue biopsies revealed that 386 genes exhibit a daily rhythm, and the timing of macronutrient intake altered the activity of roughly one‑third of these genes.

Key findings include improved markers of insulin sensitivity when the participants consumed a fat‑rich breakfast and a carbohydrate‑rich evening meal, while a fat‑rich dinner amplified the expression of inflammatory genes. The results suggest that eating fats at the “wrong” time of day may increase long‑term metabolic disease risk by affecting the body’s internal clock and related metabolic pathways.
