German supermarket porcini mushrooms fail consumer safety tests
An investigation by the NDR consumer magazine ‘Markt’ has revealed significant quality defects in various porcini mushroom products sold in German supermarkets. Testing included frozen mushrooms, dried mushrooms, and a frozen porcini pizza.
Experts, including mycologist Nadja Frotscher and chef Jens Rittmeyer, identified maggot damage, worms, and decayed mushroom parts in several samples. Specifically, frozen porcini products from EDEKA (‘Herzstücke’) and Niklas (sold at Kaufland) showed worm tunnels in the stems and caps, along with mushy textures upon preparation. A plastic thread was also discovered in a package of Niklas products.
Consumer advocates and experts warned that severe maggot infestation can lead to protein decomposition and stomach discomfort. While EDEKA stated that worm damage was not identifiable and attributed certain structures to natural tissue, and Niklas noted that insect infestation could not be entirely ruled out, consumer protection representatives characterized the findings as violations of established guidelines for edible mushrooms.
