German Survey Finds Generation Z Prefers Combustion Cars Over EVs

A survey conducted by AutoScout24 together with LeasingMarkt.de of German drivers with a car licence shows that 55 % of 18‑ to 29‑year‑olds would choose a gasoline or diesel vehicle for their next purchase, while only 20 % favor hybrid and another 20 % favor fully electric models. The preference for combustion engines declines in older age groups, and the strongest interest in electric cars appears among 40‑ to 49‑year‑olds, where 24.7 % would consider an EV.

The result contrasts with a 2024 ADAC poll in which a majority of the same young age group expressed openness to buying an electric car. "It is surprising at first glance that the youngest cohort leans most strongly toward combustion engines," said Stefan Schneck, Germany sales director at AutoScout24. He added that the younger respondents’ key purchasing criteria are similar to older drivers, suggesting a more nuanced picture of Generation Z’s car preferences than the common stereotype that they are the biggest supporters of electric mobility.
