German survey shows majority support for highway speed limits
A representative survey commissioned by the automobile club ACV reveals that a majority of respondents in Germany support a general speed limit on autobahns. According to the results, 58 percent of those surveyed view such a limitation positively, while 29 percent are opposed.
There is a notable difference in opinion based on vehicle type. Electric vehicle (EV) drivers show higher support for a speed limit at 68 percent, compared to 57 percent among drivers of internal combustion engine vehicles. The ACV suggests this may be due to the direct correlation between high speeds, increased energy consumption, and reduced driving range experienced by EV users.
Demographic differences were also observed. 64 percent of women support a speed limit, citing traffic safety and climate protection as primary reasons, whereas 54 percent of men favor the measure. Additionally, men reported feeling safer on the autobahn at a higher rate (82 percent) than women (68 percent).
