German Synodal Conference first meeting postponed indefinitely

The first meeting of the German Synodal Conference, originally scheduled for November 6–7 in Stuttgart, has been postponed indefinitely. The delay is due to the Holy See's failure to approve the statutes required to establish the new governing body for the Catholic Church in Germany.

The proposed organ is intended to include 27 diocesan bishops, 27 representatives from the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), and 27 additional members, all with equal voting rights. This body represents the next phase of the controversial German synodal path, which concluded in 2023 after addressing topics such as women's diaconate and lay preaching.

Bishop Heiner Wilmer, Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, noted that while he believes the process will move forward, information from Rome suggests it “will take a little more time.” Some observers suggest the Vatican may be attempting to synchronize the German conference with the universal Church's planned synodal assembly for 2027–2028.
