German private TV networks face significant viewership declines
German private television broadcasters are facing significant viewership challenges. Major networks including RTL, ProSieben, and Sat. 1 have reported substantial declines in primetime ratings, particularly within the key 14-49 age demographic.
RTL’s flagship quiz show, “Wer wird Millionär?”, hosted by Günther Jauch, experienced a sharp drop in viewership. Following a summer break, the show saw its audience fall from approximately three million viewers to 2.11 million in a single week. This decline is attributed to a delayed start time caused by a special news broadcast regarding political developments in Saxony-Anhalt.
Other private programs also struggled; RTL’s “Das Sommerhaus der Stars” and Sat. 1’s “Wer ist Deutschlands Superhirn?” reported low market shares. In contrast, public broadcaster ARD dominated the evening, with its crime drama “Verlorene Seelen” securing 5.30 million viewers and a 26.5 percent market share.
