German theaters stage modern Romeo and Juliet interpretations
German theaters are presenting modern interpretations of Shakespearean themes. At the Staatstheater Cottbus, the tenure of Berthold Schneider has opened with a production titled ‘Romeo and Julia in four arts’. This multidisciplinary performance integrates acting, opera, ballet, and concert elements to tell the classic tragedy.
Meanwhile, the Westfälisches Landestheater (WLT) is staging ‘Die Zertrennlichen’, a production for children and youth that serves as a modern Romeo and Juliet narrative. Directed by Dalila Niksic, the play explores friendship and racism through the relationship between two children, Sabah and Romain, whose bond is challenged by the prejudices of their parents. The piece has been recognized with the German Children's Theater Award.
