German tourist killed in South Tyrol hiking fall

A German woman, about 60 years old, died after falling roughly 200 metres while hiking on the Tiroler Höhenweg in the Passeiertal of South Tyrol, Italy. The accident occurred about half an hour after the group of around ten walkers set out from the Planhütte, a mountain hut at about 1,600 m altitude, where they had been staying overnight. Rescue services deployed a helicopter, but the woman was found dead at the scene.

The remaining hikers received psychological assistance following the incident. This was the second fatal accident in the region within a few hours; an 80‑year‑old man had also died after a fall the previous day. South Tyrol, a popular Alpine destination, is Italy’s northernmost province where German is widely spoken.
