European tourism trends show high saturation in Greece and strong German travel demand
Recent data from Eurostat and Destatis highlight significant trends in European tourism. German travelers remain a dominant force in the sector, accounting for 35.9 percent of all overnight stays in Austria and 22.5 percent in Croatia. Across the EU, German tourists represent 11.6 percent of all overnight stays, making them the largest foreign visitor group in approximately half of the member states, including Italy, France, and the Czech Republic.
In terms of tourism saturation, Greek island regions have recorded the highest levels in the European Union. The South Aegean, including Santorini and Rhodes, saw 127.2 overnight stays per resident, while the Ionian islands recorded 102.6. Other highly saturated areas include the Italian province of Bolzano, the Croatian Adriatic coast, and the Spanish Balearic Islands.
Regional developments also show growth and shifts in accommodation preferences. In Oberstaufen, overnight stays increased by 4.5 percent in the first half of 2026. In Bavaria, the number of guests reached a record 18.6 million in the first half of the year, with a notable shift toward holiday apartments and houses, which saw an 8.8 percent increase, while camping and traditional guesthouses experienced more stagnant or declining trends.
