Traubing pilot plant to turn excess solar power into green hydrogen

Local entrepreneur Markus Guggemos plans to install a pilot facility in Traubing, Germany, that will use surplus electricity from his photovoltaic installations to produce green hydrogen via electro‑lysis. The municipal council has expressed positive support for the proposal, which would involve a container‑sized electrolyser, an integrated battery storage unit and a water source from a well or the public network.

The project aims to improve the utilisation of otherwise unsold solar power and could later feed the hydrogen into the natural‑gas grid or convert it to synthetic fuels such as green ammonia. Current efficiency estimates are around 40 percent, with the developer expecting improvements to about 80 percent within five to six years. Environmental considerations include a nearby biotope, which authorities say can be preserved with appropriate compensation measures.
