German towns celebrate milestone summer festivals: 50‑year AWO Oberlar and 135‑year MTV Mülheim

The AWO Oberlar marked its 50th anniversary on 13 July 2026 with a large summer festival in Oberlar, Germany. Despite extreme heat, around 200 visitors enjoyed a varied programme that included the Kriegsdorfer Männerballett, an a‑cappella band, a magician, a line‑dance group and a Kölsch‑dialect band. Volunteers supplied chilled drinks and food, while children took part in games and a prize‑wheel. Chairwoman Birgit Biegel thanked the volunteers, saying the event would not have been possible without their “unremitting effort, especially in the intense heat.”

In Mülheim, the MTV club celebrated its 135‑year anniversary with a summer fest that attracted roughly 200 members, friends and guests. The evening featured a cold‑and‑warm buffet prepared by Ricarda and Stavros Angelides, a popular terrace quiz with 65 participants, and speeches from local officials including district mayor Jörg Kampermann. A prize‑winning anniversary cake from Stadtcafé Sander was served, and DJ Zappel kept the dance floor full until the early hours of the morning.
