German towns' children collect climate miles for UN conference
German cities Leipzig and Bamberg took part in the "Kindermeilen – Kleine Klimaschützer unterwegs" campaign, encouraging children from kindergartens and primary schools to record environmentally friendly journeys as "green miles." In Leipzig the municipal environmental office provides materials and a newsletter; participating children may log trips over a period of one to four weeks, and the total mileage will be forwarded to the climate alliance for presentation at the UN Climate Conference in Antalya, Turkey (Nov 9‑20). In Bamberg around 1,100 children gathered 6,207 miles during a week‑long event in early July and handed the mileage to Mayor Sebastian M. Niedermaier and Landrat Johannes Maciejonczyk, who will deliver them to the same UN conference as a symbolic contribution from the region.
