German towns grapple with new full‑day school care law

From 1 August 2026 a federal law gives primary‑school children in Germany a legal right to full‑day care, including holiday programmes. The city of Bückeburg warned that the district of Schaumburg’s decision to locate holiday care in neighboring towns, rather than locally, creates a logistical burden for families. Mayor Axel Wohlgemuth said the city had planned a transition solution but the short lead‑time and staffing limits forced reliance on the district’s offer.

In Wiesbaden, the social‑work department launched the "Vereine im Ganztag" project to link schools with local clubs. The initiative, backed by Social Council Dr Patricia Becher and coordinated by Miriam Laut, aims to provide educational, cultural and sports activities and to streamline cooperation between schools, care providers and community organisations.
