German towns see mixed fortunes for local ice vending as a new machine opens in Herlazhofen and Pfaffenhofen hut shuts

On 1 August a modern ice‑vending machine was installed at the fire station in Herlazhofen, Germany, by regional start‑up founder Christoph Abt, a milk technologist who produces the ice himself. It is the seventh machine of his company and is promoted as a convenient, year‑round treat for families, cyclists, athletes and walkers. Local officials, including Ortsvorsteher Sven Stöckle, and several municipal services helped secure the location.

In Pfaffenhofen, the Mohrenhansen Hof ice hut run by Sabrina Mayer’s family closed early after three years of trust‑based sales. Repeated thefts left the operation with losses in the three‑digit euro range. Mayer said, “Dieses Jahr ist es wirklich katastrophal,” and the family is now discussing a possible automated vending solution to replace the hut.
