German towns showcase and remove window art installations

In the town of Eching near Freising, a window‑gallery of local artists installed on the façade of the Huberwirt building was dismantled by the municipal building crew after roughly twelve months on the order of Mayor Michael Steigerwald. The project, funded and organized by the local Kulturforum, sparked mixed reactions, with supporters praising public art and critics calling it an eyesore.

Meanwhile, in Gerolzhofen, pupils from Ludwig‑Derleth‑Realschule have turned shop windows across the Altstadt into a temporary exhibition titled “Herz zeigen”. Running until 26 July, the student works—drawing inspiration from Keith Haring, Banksy and others—promote optimism and community spirit. The display is backed by the city’s social‑cohesion programme, the local tourist office and the school’s parents’ association.

Both initiatives reflect growing interest in bringing art into everyday public spaces in German municipalities, while also highlighting divergent local responses to such projects.
