German towns use youth art projects to beautify electrical boxes

Local communities in Germany are utilizing street art to transform utility infrastructure into cultural landmarks through youth-led projects.

In Hilpoltstein, children aged nine to twelve designed a colorful motif for an electrical box on Christoph-Sturm-Straße. Under the theme ‘Culture in Hilpoltstein,’ the artwork features local cultural monuments, a stage, and a cyclist. The project was implemented voluntarily by Mareike Ibinger, who previously initiated a call for artistic designs for electrical boxes during her professional tenure with the city.

Similarly, in Hünfeld, the ‘Kunst am Kasten’ project is transforming six electrical boxes into artworks. Led by professional graffiti artist Ingmar Süß, 25 children and adolescents are participating in the initiative. The program includes educational components where participants learn the history of graffiti, proper spray techniques, and legal guidelines. Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok noted that previous installations have remained untouched by unauthorized graffiti, respecting the existing art.
