German towns warn of fiscal crisis during 'Kommunen am Limit' action day

On a nationwide "Kommunen am Limit" action day, municipalities in Germany highlighted a worsening fiscal situation. The German Municipal Association, District Association and Municipal and Local Government Association called for urgent reforms as the projected municipal deficit reached about €30 billion in 2025, with a similar shortfall expected in 2026 and cumulative deficits of almost €120 billion between 2025‑2029.

In Sinsheim, mayor Marco Siesing and council members displayed clocks set to five‑to‑twelve in front of the city museum to stress limited funding for services such as cultural venues, schools and the public pool. In Schweinfurt, mayor Ralf Hofmann made a similar appeal on the market square, warning that delegating new tasks to municipalities without adequate financing threatens everyday services. Both urged the federal and state governments to compensate deficits, increase municipalities’ share of tax revenues and apply the principle “who orders, pays”.
