German shoe chains pilot digital tip prompts at checkout

German shoe retailers Aktiv Schuh and Shoe City have begun showing digital tip suggestions on payment terminals, mirroring the practice common in restaurants. Rolf Pangels, chief executive of the German Textile, Shoes and Leather Goods Trade Association, says the experiment could expand to the broader fashion trade, arguing that good personal service should be rewarded and that the system could aid employee retention.

A YouGov survey of more than 2,000 consumers found only 27 % would consider leaving a tip for good advice in a clothing or shoe store, while roughly two‑thirds of respondents opposed the idea. Large chains such as H&M, Deichmann, Galeria and Bauhaus have indicated they have no plans to introduce tip prompts nationwide. The tips collected by the pilot stores are distributed among staff, but the practice remains limited to a few pilot locations and has not yet become a standard retail feature.
