German Transport Minister Calls for Overhaul of Bridge and Rail Maintenance

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder warned that Germany's bridge‑inspection system cannot prevent sudden failures, citing the full closure of the Bonner Nordbrücke on 3 June 2026. The ageing Rhine crossing showed hidden corrosion that forced an immediate shutdown and a decision to demolish and replace the structure.

Schnieder also criticised the stalled "generalsanierungen" of the rail network, noting that many large‑scale renovation projects have missed deadlines and caused repeated line closures. He highlighted problems on the Cologne‑Wuppertal route and the nine‑month shutdown of the Hamburg‑Berlin line, and said the 40 planned major construction sites will now stretch into the mid‑2030s. The minister called for clearer accountability from Deutsche Bahn and a review of the overall renovation strategy.
