Record low Rhine water levels spur taskforce, halt shipping FAST-MOVING
Historic low water levels have been recorded on the Rhine in North‑Rhine Westphalia, with gauges in Cologne (63 cm), Düsseldorf (17 cm), Duisburg‑Ruhrort (149 cm) and Emmerich showing negative or dry readings. The waterway, Europe’s busiest inland transport route, is now unable to carry full cargo loads – some ships can only take about one‑fifth of their usual freight.
The shortage has forced river‑cruise operators on the Rhine and Danube to cancel or reroute trips, with several vessels stranded and passengers transferred by bus. Ferry services on the Rhine are also severely limited, and some routes operate only for light vehicles. The low water is attributed to a prolonged heat wave and drought that have left the rivers at their lowest levels in years.
North‑Rhine Westphalia Transport Minister Oliver Krischer has called for a national taskforce and immediate federal funding to expand the river channel (the "Fahrrinne") and improve transport capacity. He urges the federal government to finance the continuation of the channel project between Duisburg and Cologne, which is intended to keep the Rhine navigable during low‑water periods.
