German travelers warned of customs limits on souvenirs via Zurich

German holidaymakers returning through Zurich Airport face two sets of customs regulations: Swiss rules for the first border crossing and EU rules for the subsequent entry into Germany. Items made from protected wildlife, such as coral jewelry or ivory, can be seized under international conservation law, and counterfeit designer goods may be confiscated if their value exceeds duty‑free limits. Personal use quantities of alcohol, tobacco and coffee are allowed, but EU limits apply – up to 1 litre of spirits and 200 cigarettes for non‑EU arrivals, with a total value cap of €430 when flying and €300 when arriving by road or rail. The Lohnsteuerhilfe Bayern (Lohi) advises travelers to check these thresholds to avoid fines or seizure of goods.
