Thousands of NATO troops, primarily from the German military, have been conducting the Freedom Shield I exercise in Pabradė, Lithuania, near the border with Belarus. The six-week drill involves approximately 3,000 personnel utilizing drones, electronic warfare, heavy armor, artillery, infantry, helicopters, and fighter jets to practice defending NATO territory against a 'conventional aggressor'.

A central element of this deployment is Germany's 45th Armoured Brigade, also known as the Lithuania Brigade. As part of a long-term strategic shift, Germany has committed to permanently stationing approximately 4,800 troops in Lithuania by the end of 2027. This brigade will be distributed across two locations and will consist of five battalions, aimed at deterring Russian aggression.

Germany has contributed to NATO's multinational battlegroup in Lithuania since 2017 as part of the enhanced Forward Presence (eFP). While previous deployments followed a rotational model, the new permanent presence underscores a commitment to the security of the alliance's eastern flank. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized this connection, stating, 'Protecting Vilnius means protecting Berlin.'
