German U-672 submarine located in English Channel after 82 years

A team of divers has located the German U-672 submarine in the English Channel, 82 years after it disappeared during World War II. The vessel was found approximately 32 kilometers off the coast of Salcombe, Devon, at a depth of about 70 meters.

The submarine was attacked by the British ship HMS Balfour in July 1944. Following the attack, the crew decided to scuttle the vessel to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. All 52 crew members successfully abandoned the submarine and were later rescued by British aircraft and vessels, eventually becoming prisoners of war.

The discovery was delayed for decades due to an administrative error in British Navy records. While the sinking was documented, the recorded coordinates were approximately 74 kilometers away from the actual location. German historian and submarine specialist Axel Niestlé confirmed the identity of the wreckage.
