German Union politicians urge female candidate for 2027 presidency

Debate regarding the succession of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has intensified following recent state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin. Mechthild Heil, chair of the women's group within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, is advocating for a female candidate to hold the nation's highest office, noting that after 77 years, a woman should be elected.

The recent state elections have clarified the potential composition of the Federal Convention (Bundesversammlung), which will decide the successor on January 30. Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament, has been repeatedly mentioned as a potential candidate. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that discussions regarding Steinmeier's successor will take place after the elections in September.
