German universities debate funding as Excellence Strategy awards millions
German universities are facing diverging perspectives following the announcement of the Excellence Strategy funding results.
Universities in the Rhein-Main region, including Frankfurt, Mainz, and Darmstadt, are set to become Excellence Universities. They will receive up to 155 million euros over seven years from federal and state funds. This funding will be distributed primarily through competitive tenders for research projects in the fields of Health, Data, Matter, and Society, focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence, cognition, and new therapies.
In contrast, student representatives from the University of Cologne and the NRW State AStA Meeting have called for an end to the excellence and third-party funding model. They argue that the current system undermines university democracy and prioritizes the interests of capital over academic freedom. Critics suggest that the pressure to secure external funding forces researchers to cater to reviewers rather than addressing societal needs, and they advocate for a shift toward stable, needs-based basic funding and the implementation of civil clauses.
