German universities receive prestigious Excellence University status
The Friedrich Schiller University Jena has been awarded the prestigious status of an Excellence University. The decision, announced on October 2, follows the university's application titled ‘Light. Life. Liberty. – Connecting People and Ideas’. The initiative aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research, attract top scientists, and enhance cooperation between research, teaching, and industry.
In a separate development regarding Germany's Excellence Strategy, the Rhein-Main Universities (RMU) alliance—comprising Technical University of Darmstadt, Goethe University Frankfurt, and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz—has also been selected. As the first cross-state alliance to receive this distinction, the RMU will receive up to 155 million euros in funding over seven years starting in 2027. The funding is split between the federal government and the respective states. Other institutions receiving the title include universities in Freiburg, Jena, and Cologne.
