German university third-party research funding declines in 2024

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), third-party research funding per university professor in Germany decreased by 2.1% in 2024. On average, professors secured 325,400 euros, which was 6,800 euros less than the previous year.

RWTH Aachen University maintained the highest third-party funding per professorship at 1,160,400 euros. It was followed by the Technical University of Munich with 891,100 euros and the University of Stuttgart with 860,500 euros. When looking at total third-party funding amounts, the Technical University of Munich ranked first with 436 million euros, followed by RWTH Aachen with 403 million euros and the Technical University of Dresden with 296 million euros.

By subject group, engineering sciences recorded the highest funding per professor at 715,600 euros, despite a slight decrease. Human medicine and health sciences followed with 707,400 euros, representing a 4% increase. Agricultural, forestry, and nutritional sciences, including veterinary medicine, ranked third with 391,500 euros.
