German utilities expand power grids to support energy transition

German energy infrastructure providers are undertaking significant grid modernization projects to support the energy transition and rising electricity demand.

In the Elbe-Oberlausitz region, 50Hertz Transmission GmbH is planning the construction of a 92 km long 380-kV high-voltage overhead line between the substations of Streumen, Altwilschdorf, and Schmölln. This project aims to secure long-term power supply for the Dresden area, driven by increasing electrification and the expansion of energy-intensive industries. Preliminary work, including surveying and soil investigations, is scheduled to begin in the Schmölln-Putzkau municipality.

In Schermbeck, Westnetz is modernizing a substation to accommodate the expansion of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The upgrades include replacing existing transformers with new units rated at 40 MVA and 50 MVA, as well as installing new medium-voltage switchgear. These improvements will establish a new 25-kilovolt voltage level to increase grid capacity.
