German utilities warn of misleading smart meter advertisements

Utility companies in Germany, including Stadtwerke Gunzenhausen and Stadtwerke Roth, have issued warnings regarding misleading advertisements concerning the mandatory installation of smart meters.

In Gunzenhausen, customers reported receiving letters from DMG Deutsche Messwesen GmbH and metrify smart metering GmbH that create the false impression that legal requirements mandate the installation of smart meters. The utility provider clarified that it has no business or contractual relationship with these companies and that such letters are private advertisements rather than official notices from the utility or the legislature.

Similarly, Stadtwerke Roth warned that letters from Deutsche Messwesen GmbH are from a competitive meter operator acting independently. The utility emphasized that customers are not required to respond or schedule appointments based on these letters. They also noted that advertised benefits, such as a potential €102 annual reduction in network charges, are not automatic and depend on specific legal requirements and contract terms. Both utilities advise customers to inform themselves thoroughly and avoid making decisions under time pressure.
