German utility providers warn of misleading smart meter offers

Consumers in parts of Germany, including Nuremberg and Bayreuth, are receiving mass mailings from competitive metering point operators offering the installation of smart meters. These letters often use official-sounding language to suggest urgency or imply that installation is already planned for specific addresses.

Local utility providers, such as N-ERGIE Netz GmbH and Stadtwerke Bayreuth, have issued warnings clarifying that residents are under no obligation to sign contracts with these external providers. In these regions, the local municipal utilities are responsible for the legally mandated installation of smart meters, which is typically provided at no cost to the consumer.

The consumer protection agency (Verbraucherzentrale) advises caution, noting that competitive providers are not subject to the same price caps as local grid operators. Consequently, switching to an external provider may result in higher ongoing costs. Consumers are encouraged to carefully review contract terms, including durations and potential fees, before committing to any third-party offers.
