German venues implement smart glass bans to protect privacy
Public facilities and venues in Germany are implementing bans or stricter regulations on smart glasses due to concerns over secret filming and privacy violations. In Thuringia, the Rosenkeller student club in Jena has officially added a ban on smart glasses to its house rules to protect guest privacy following incidents of unauthorized recording. Similarly, the Sport- und Gesundheitsbad Tabarz reported an incident where a guest used Meta-branded glasses to film a pool area, later sharing the footage on social media.
In Leipzig, the City Council is addressing the issue following a motion by the Green Party. While smart glasses were not previously explicitly banned in Leipzig's public swimming pools, officials are moving to include them in formal house rules and are training staff to be more vigilant. The rise of these devices, which feature nearly imperceptible cameras, has led to an increase in non-consensual filming of individuals in intimate or public settings, with the resulting content often being uploaded to social media platforms.
