German voice actors file antitrust complaint against Netflix over AI clauses

The Verband Deutscher Sprecher:innen (VDS) has filed a complaint with the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) against Netflix. The association is seeking an investigation into whether the streaming giant is abusing its dominant market position regarding new contract terms set to take effect in early 2026.

The dispute centers on a clause that allows Netflix to use voice recordings to train artificial intelligence systems without providing additional compensation to the actors. The VDS argues that many voice actors, particularly freelancers, feel economically coerced into signing these agreements to avoid being replaced in their roles. There is significant concern that actors are being forced to contribute their own data to develop AI systems that could eventually replace them.

In addition to the antitrust complaint, the VDS is supporting a data protection complaint filed with the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. This includes involvement from prominent voice actors such as Matti Klemm. While the industry remains divided on the use of AI, the VDS aims to clarify the legality of Netflix's requirements and the lack of specificity regarding how voice data is utilized and compensated.
