Gelsenkirchen basement fire triggers large emergency response in Schalke

A basement fire broke out in a multi-family residential building on Dresdner Straße in the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen on Monday evening, August 24, 2026. The alarm was received at 8:48 PM.

Due to the possibility that residents were still inside the building, approximately 42 emergency responders were deployed to the scene. Firefighters conducted a search of the entire building using breathing apparatus to ensure no one was trapped. While no residents were found during the search, one individual contacted emergency services for a precautionary medical examination and was found to be uninjured.

Firefighting units from the Altstadt, Hessler, and Buer stations, along with volunteer units from Altstadt, Hessler, and Horst, worked to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading. Dresdner Straße was closed during the operation. Following the containment and ventilation of the building, the scene was handed over to the police, who are investigating the cause of the fire.
