German volunteer fire departments report operations and recruitment needs
Volunteer fire departments in Germany are highlighting their operational activities and the ongoing need for personnel. In Seeheim, the volunteer fire department responded to 20 calls during the month of July. These incidents included various fires, such as a kitchen fire in Bickenbach, burning grass, and a tree stump fire in the Schlosspark. The department also managed two traffic accidents, one of which required the use of hydraulic rescue equipment to free a person trapped in a vehicle, and provided assistance for helicopter landings.
In Mitlosheim, the volunteer fire department held an action day to demonstrate their equipment and the realities of honorary service. While the department currently maintains 26 active members and eight youth members, leadership expressed concerns regarding future recruitment. Officials noted that as current members reach retirement age, there is uncertainty about whether enough young people will join to fill the upcoming gaps in service.
