German water industry report highlights infrastructure needs amid rising scarcity

The ‘Industry Image of the German Water Industry 2025’ has been released, documenting the current status and performance of public water supply and wastewater disposal in Germany. The report, developed by various industry associations including BDEW and DWA, was officially presented to the Federal Ministry for the Environment. It highlights that while Germany's water supply remains highly reliable and meets high technical standards, the sector faces significant challenges regarding future developments and the need for political frameworks to support necessary investments.

On a broader scale, water management is emerging as a critical economic and investment theme due to increasing global scarcity. Climate change, characterized by heatwaves and droughts, is placing stress on water resources. In Europe, the European Environment Agency reports that approximately 30 percent of the area and 33 percent of the population are under water stress. This growing demand for efficient treatment, leak reduction, and modern infrastructure—such as desalination plants and intelligent irrigation systems—is creating long-term investment opportunities in technology and utility sectors.
