German water suppliers oppose regional fertilizer regulations
German water suppliers are opposing a proposal to regionalize fertilizer regulations, which is currently being discussed at the Agricultural Ministers' Conference in Würzburg. The Association of Local Utilities (VKU), representing municipal utilities that provide drinking water to 90 percent of the German population, argues that water protection requires uniform nationwide rules.
Federal and state agricultural ministers are considering a new regulatory framework that would allow individual states to implement different models for water protection. This could replace the current system of 'Red Areas,' where farmers face strictly reduced fertilization limits due to high nitrate levels.
Critics of the regionalization plan, including a VKU spokesperson, warn that a patchwork of different state regulations could undermine uniform water protection standards and lead to competitive distortions. Michaela Kaniber, chair of the Agricultural Ministers' Conference and Bavarian Minister, stated that there is no interest in jeopardizing groundwater, noting that groundwater is unaffected by municipal or state borders.
