German waterway restoration and embankment projects reach milestones

Infrastructure and environmental restoration projects are progressing in Germany. In the Ems region, the renovation of a section of the southern Ems embankment above the weir facility has been successfully completed. The project involved securing approximately 530 meters of the bank using sandstone riprap to address damage and settlement cracks identified during previous water level reductions. The work required extensive groundwater monitoring to protect the nearby historic old town and its pile foundations.

In the Emscher region, the renaturation of the Grotenbach and Kirchhörder Bach is reaching key milestones. The Emschergenossenschaft, in cooperation with the cities of Witten and Dortmund, has successfully connected the Grotenbach to a newly modeled course within Witten. This phase involved removing concrete linings and relocating a 1.1-kilometer stretch of the watercourse to allow for more natural development. Additionally, the Witten-Annen-Kanal is undergoing simultaneous sanitation to manage industrial wastewater and rainwater.
