German wind industry expects decline in new orders

The German wind energy industry is anticipating a significant decline in new orders, according to a survey conducted by WMP Consult and reported by the IG Metall Küste union. While nearly 60 percent of surveyed works councils expected rising orders last year, that figure is projected to drop to below 20 percent for 2026.

Although current capacity utilization remains high at 95 percent, union representatives warn of a potential drop in utilization and subsequent job cuts over the next two years. The union has attributed this shift in sentiment to recent energy policy reforms introduced by Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU).

The reforms to the Renewable Energy Sources Act and the grid connection package aim to reduce state subsidies and lower electricity costs. However, critics, including the German Wind Energy Association, argue that the removal of certain compensations—specifically when the grid cannot absorb excess wind power—could lead to a major downturn in the sector.
