German women's handball team begins European Championship preparations
The German women's national handball team has begun preparations for the European Championship, scheduled for December 3 to 20. Following their recent World Championship silver medal, head coach Markus Gaugisch is focusing on reintegrating the squad and refining team tactics.
The team's defensive unit faces significant challenges. Aimée von Pereira retired from professional handball this summer due to health reasons, and Xenia Smits is currently on maternity leave. Gaugisch noted that the loss of these players disrupts a previously stable defensive core, expressing uncertainty regarding whether Smits will return to competitive form in time for the tournament.
As part of their initial training camp in Großwallstadt, the team will travel to Granollers, Spain, for two international friendly matches against the Spanish national team to assess their current standing.
