German workers need at least €3,000 net monthly for happiness, survey shows

A Forsa poll commissioned by the job platform kununu.com found that German employees report higher job satisfaction once they earn around €3,000 net per month. About two‑thirds of respondents in this income bracket describe themselves as happy at work, while satisfaction drops sharply for those earning below €2,000 net.

Many respondents indicated an aspirational target of roughly €6,000 net per month for optimal well‑being, a level that exceeds the current average German net salary of about €3,000. Economists note that beyond a certain point additional income yields diminishing returns in happiness, acting more as a “hygiene factor” that eliminates financial stress rather than creating new satisfaction. Other studies cited confirm that health, family and social relationships remain the primary drivers of overall well‑being.

The survey also highlighted that higher earnings often bring greater responsibility, longer working hours and less leisure time, which can offset some of the financial benefits. Regional and gender gaps in satisfaction have narrowed in recent years, according to analysis from the German Institute for Economic Research.
