German WWII fast attack boat LS 6 found in Ionian Sea

The rare German Leichte Schnellboot 6 (LS 6), a lightweight aluminum fast‑attack craft of the Kriegsmarine, was located on the seabed of the Ionian Sea near Preveza, Greece, at a depth of about 96 m. The wreck, which sank in September 1943 while being towed from Corfu to Piraeus after damage from a British air raid, remained almost intact for 83 years. Historian Giorgos Karelas, using archival German naval records, coordinated a multi‑year search that began in 2013. The identity of the vessel was confirmed by the AegeanTec team during a closed‑circuit rebreather dive, which observed the characteristic silhouette, Junkers Jumo engines, and the towing cable still attached to the bow. LS 6 is the only surviving example of its class worldwide, making the discovery significant for World‑War‑II naval history and underwater archaeology.
