German youth sports face coach shortage and parental pressure concerns
A lecture in Cologne organized by RSV NRW featured sport psychologist Grit Moschke, who discussed how parents can support children in elite sport without adding undue pressure. The session offered guidance on recognizing stress, the role of parents, and signs that a young athlete’s wellbeing may be at risk.
At the same time, VfR Büttgen, a local club in North Rhine‑Westphalia, reported a severe shortage of qualified coaches following a post‑pandemic surge in children joining sports programs. Without additional trainers, basketball, handball and early‑childhood gymnastics classes risk being cancelled, and two parent‑child courses for 1‑3‑year‑olds may be dropped unless volunteers are found. The club is seeking individuals aged 16 or older to fill the gap, offering a modest allowance and training support.
